Certified as a scuba diver in 1992, Michael Gerhartz has since become an avid underwater photographer. While teaching his students how to dive, environmental awareness was always very important to him. Over the last couple years, Michael has found several organizations he supports and identifies with.

SeaLegacy
SeaLegacy is a global movement that uses the power of imagery, storytelling and community to drive transformational solutions for healthy and abundant oceans. The organization harnesses the power of millions of people around the world through unprecedented visual storytelling in conservation to drive targeted wins. SeaLegacy works to protect marine habitats and species at risk while promoting sustainable fisheries and advancing policy and behaviour change through four main program areas:
1) Defend Flagship Species 2) Protect Ocean and Coastal Habitats 3) Drive Sustainable Fisheries 4) Tackle Plastic Pollution.

SeaLegacy is now in its fifth year and has grown from a handful of photographers to a global collective with an audience of 24.6 million ocean citizens around the world.

Paul Nicklen
Born in Canada, Paul Nicklen is a photographer, filmmaker, marine biologist, and co-founder of SeaLegacy. Nicklen’s images have garnered over 30 of the highest awards given to any photographer in his field, including BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year and the prestigious World Press Photo for Photojournalism

Christina Mittermeier
A virtuous mind and voice in conservation photography and one of the most influential female photographers in the world, Cristina Mittermeier began her career as a Marine Biologist working in her native Mexico.

Today, Cristina is the Co-founder of the conservation society, SeaLegacy, a National Geographic contributing photographer, a Sony Artisan of Imagery and the editor of 26 coffee table books on conservation issues. She is the first female photographer to reach 1M followers on Instagram and was a 2018 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. She is acknowledged as one of the most Influential Women in Ocean Conservation in 2018 by Ocean Geographic, and The Men’s Journal recently named her as one of the 18 Most Adventurous Women in the World.

Shakira
The Columbian born singer and songwriter is a UNICEF Goodwill ambassador, advocating access to education for children around the world. Her humanitarian and advocacy work is focused on universal and early childhood development. When she was 18 years old, she became involved with the Pies Descalzos Foundation in Columbia, focusing on improving the health, nutrition and education of children. She is also a supporter of the ALAS Foundation, which focuses on early childhood policies.
